1. Offer a Balanced Variety

When planning what food to serve at any type of gathering, be sure to have something for everyone by including a protein, veggie, comfort carbs and a favorite recipe to share with others. I always try to keep on hand the ingredients for some of my go-to appetizers, making it easy to share a favorite recipe for a gathering on short notice.

Cucumber Dill Dip
Ingredients:
- 2 Large Cucumbers or 4 Mini Cucumbers
- 1/4 c Mayonnaise
- 1/4 c Sour Cream
- Fresh Dill or Dill Weed Spice
Peel cucumbers and cut in half. Scrape out seeds in cucumber prior to chopping. Put in washcloth and wring out juice. Add sour cream and mayonnaise. Add in fresh dill or dill weed spice, and season to taste. Pro-tip: Fresh dill is preferred but dill seasoning can work in a pinch!
This Cucumber Dill recipe is quick and easy to throw together and one of my favorites in the summer months. We like using this dip as a garnish on top of grilled teriyaki salmon or paired with crackers and veggies for a simple, refreshing dip. Use mini bowls for dips and ceramic spoons as an elegant and hygienic way to serve up this recipe.
2. Use Stylish Boards or Trays

Charcuterie boards are always a great way to display a variety of food items and adding in a few small bowls for dips to the traditional boards makes it easy to fill up your plate to satisfy your appetite. This is a great option when hosting a larger group, allowing guests to graze with a relaxed feel. For smaller gatherings, I like to serve up food on my favorite dishes that fit our decor style and focus my spread on our favorite appetizers.

Artichoke Dip
Ingredients:
- Artichoke Hearts -14oz can
- 1 C Mayonnaise
- 1 C Parmesan Cheese (Grated)
- Diced Green Chiles -4oz can
- Jalepeno Slices (Optional)
Chop artichoke hears into small pieces. Add in mayo, parmesan cheese and chopped green chiles. Add several slices of Jalepeno to taste. Mix together and bake at 350 for 20 minutes or until mixture bubbles. Pro-tip: This dish is best served warm.
This is hands down my favorite dip and one I frequently get asked to share the recipe. There is something about the combination of these ingredients melted together and paired with Tostito chips that is just delicious! I frequently serve this during the winter months when hosting friends or family for a Chiefs game because it’s an easy dip to make on short notice that’s perfect for football season.
3. Use Varying Heights & Shapes
Elevate your spread of appetizers by using different dishes with varying heights and shapes. I have a few classic dishes in different sizes and shapes, allowing me to easily mix and match depending on what I am serving our guests. Layering also helps to create flow and makes the spread feel abundance even with just a few dishes set out on display.

Homemade Ranch Dip
Ingredients:
- Ranch Dip Mix – 1 packet
- Sour Cream -8oz
- Cream Cheese -8oz block
Soften cream cheese (set out or melt in microwave). Mix well the ranch dip seasoning, cream cheese and sour cream in a bowl or serving dish with a lid. Refrigerate for an hour or longer to allow the ingredients to form into a dip consistency. Serve when ready to eat! Pro-tip: Make in the morning for an evening event to give plenty of time to have a cold, refreshing dip with your favorite sides.
This dip is a slight variation from the recipe on the dip seasoning packet and is my go-to dip for veggies or potato chips. These simple ingredients pack a punch and have you coming back for more servings of this yummy dip. I like having this as part of a veggie tray to help give a vessel for guests who want a healthier snack as it adds an extra flavor to an otherwise simple appetizer.
4. Spread It Out
If you have the space, such as the use of a kitchen island, spreading out the appetizers to help avoid crowding is a good idea. Consider appetizer stations and grouping like things together to help your guest create a mini meal balanced with a variety of foods. Labeling makes it even easier for guests to find their favorites in a larger spread and helps identify new recipes in the mix.

Fruit Kabobs
Ingredients:
- Strawberries
- Blueberries
- Grapes
- Pineapple
- Any other seasonal fruit
Rinse fruit. Chop larger items to create bite size pieces. Use bamboo skewers (or toothpicks for a smaller version) and slide fruit onto skewers. Place on tray and enjoy. Pro-tip: Leave room on either side of the skewer to leave a space to hold while eating.
Fruit Kabobs is such an easy way to have fresh fruit out for guests and we have found these skewers filled with fruit are a favorite for both kids and adults! We like to mix in a variety of different fruits on each skewer, but these could easily be made with using only one fruit selection, depending on your preferences. Either way it’s a hands free, easy snack with endless combinations to enjoy the seasonal favorites anytime of year.
5. Pair with a Favorite Wine

You all know I love a good glass of wine and when hosting guests, selecting the wine is just as important as the food prep and display! Over the years we have locked into our favorite wineries, keeping the guess work out of finding a good wine. We will rotate in a new bottle or winery with special events or trips but for the average Saturday evening I stick with my tried and true wines. Depending on your guests, having a few drink options both non-alcoholic and cocktail options is a nice way to ensure there is something for everyone.

Meat & Cheese Board
Ingredients:
- Favorite meats (pick 2-3)
- Favorite cheeses (pick 2-3)
- Favorite cracker or nuts (pick 2-3)
This can be a simple display with a mix of meats, cheese and crackers to fill a tray with a high protein snack. Pro-tip: Don’t overthink this one and keep it easy with a simple arrangement.
A board or serving tray filled with meat and cheese is always a good appetizer to throw into the mix. You really can’t go wrong here and picking a couple of different meats to pair with a few varieties of cheese is an easy food item to put together in just a few minutes. I will typically keep these items in stock in our fridge as it’s a nice quick snack on days when I need some extra protein which makes it simple to create a charcuterie board on short notice.
