Simple Home Organizing Solutions | Cabinet Storage
Hey there! If you are new to reading Home with Booz, thank you for being here. If you have visited this blog before, thank you for coming back to learn with me ways we can make our lives less complicated and more fulfilled.
I can hardly believe we are almost at the end of June. The summer is going by so fast! This is the time of year when I slow down on projects and spend more time enjoying lazy days outdoors with family and friends. Our outdoor deck and patio spaces are getting a ton of use this year and I have been enjoying my coffee out on the deck as my favorite morning ritual. I’ve read getting exposure to daylight early in the morning can help set the tone for your day so I am adopting this is as one of my self-care practices to support my well-being and I highly recommend this ritual!
Even though I spend less time tackling home projects in the summer, I still enjoy a quick project like refreshing a cabinet or small space for a quick win this time of year. This past week when I ran into The Container Store to pick up one of my favorite organizing solutions, the stackable large shoe drawer, I made an error and grabbed the wrong size. Ugh, so frustrating and a reminder to always double check your measurements before running to the store! I debated about exchanging them for the larger size and delaying my project. Until I remembered I had a major opportunity to tackle a small cabinet in our living room which had slowly become a mess. This project was so easy and worked out so well, I wanted to share with all of you the details to help inspire you to tackle a storage space in less than 30 minutes!

Simple Storage Solutions
I’ve shared in recent posts how I consistently find The Container Store my go to place to find easy storage solutions to work for any space. I love the price point and versatility of their products and tend to repeat my favorites throughout our room.

I have been working on a few details in our owners closet to help improve my storage and recently purchased these stackable large shoe drawers to store all of my leggings. It works so well and I love having the ability to easily see and grab what I need. My plan is to use these to store my swimsuits and cover-ups as well but when I grabbed the small instead of the large, it limited the storage solution needed for this space and didn’t allow for a cohesive look in the closet. The good news is a storage solution with a drawer, can be used just about anywhere so within minutes, I had a new idea and quickly went to work on tackling my trouble spot, the cabinet in the living room. It’s so embarrassing but I will share the before picture because it can happen to all of us.

Before Picture &
a humbling example of
how we all can be guilty of ignoring a particular space in our home, making it the dumping ground for all the things. I’m not proud of this one at all. It was worse than I realized and definitely needed some storage solutions.
I found this white accent cabinet on Wayfair to fill the space in this little nook and have used this primarily to store candles and candle accessories. Originally I repurposed some bins I had on hand to use for storage in this cabinet but the downside was they were the wrong size, I couldn’t see what I needed and the lids made it hard to easily grab items without making a mess. Clearly, this wasn’t working and I hadn’t taken the time to figure out what I needed until now.
As always, the first step is to edit the space and purge what I didn’t use or need, either to donate or trash. I found I had quite a few candles that needed to be pitched as they could no longer be burned. Um, why did I keep these? I also found a few items that should be stored in other places which helped to eliminate most of the clutter. I then sorted what I had left to organize and gleefully realized the four stackable small shoe drawers I now had on hand, fit exactly what I needed to store in this space! What are the odds? I quickly grouped the items together, mostly taper candles and candle holders, to place in the drawers. I added a few labels with my and then placed the other items back in the cabinet.

AND…
the finished space
is so much better! I can’t believe I waited this long to tackle this cabinet. I think since it’s used so infrequently and I am often only quickly switching out a candle, I told myself I would get to it later. Then I would move on and forget about it!
It’s amazing how $33 in storage solutions and 20 minutes of my time can make such a difference. I may have walked by this space more than once afterwards just to open the cabinet doors and appreciate this simple project! 😉
The more I work on better storage solutions around our home, the more I improve our overall efficiency. We also gain clarity of what we have and what we don’t need when taking the time to edit our spaces. I am so grateful my error resulting in improving another space, with some much needed storage solutions. I highly recommend these stackable large shoe drawers as they are versatile and effective in maximizing spaces such as a cabinet or shelf. I love how these make it so easy to access and store items. The clear containers with labels added, makes it simple to put things back where they belong and limits the amount of stuff I have in this cabinet to be only what I need.
For now, I cleared off the top of the cabinet and plan to leave the space empty for awhile to see what I may add back in. I have found plants do well in this spot so will most likely will use it as another opportunity to add in greenery around our home.

This post pairs well with a Chateau Ste. Michelle Indian Wells Vineyard Chardonnay from Columbia Valley, Washington. This time of year I like to enjoy a white wine outside on the deck and this winery is one of my favorites.
