Unique Wall Art | Modern Home Decor

Hey there! If you are new to reading Home with Booz, thank you for being here. If you have visited this blog before, thank you for coming back to learn with me ways we can make our lives less complicated and more fulfilled.

When we first moved into our home, I loved having all the open wall space and focused more on the furniture and small styling details such as open shelving to start to make the home feel like us. Once we had a general flow and idea of how we would be using each living space, it was time to start adding in the wall art to pull it all together. In our basement we had some significant spaces with a blank wall and we knew we wanted to be intentional about how we curated our home. If this resonates with you, check out this post for more details.

This process takes time, however it is worth the wait to research ideas and find those special items to mix into your home decor. If you are looking for unique wall art, I am highlighting below three of my favorite pieces, to encourage you to think outside the traditional home decor trends and lean into sharing your passions or life story as part of your style. I hope you find some inspiration and new ways of how to incorporate a unique item in your home.

Vinyl Record Storage Shelf

1- Vinyl Record Storage Shelf

I’ll be honest, when my husband first shared he wanted to hang records on the wall, I had some reservations. Thankfully, he had the vision, did the research on Etsy and worked with the seller to get the look and size we needed for the space. Once it arrived and was up on the wall, it was time to review our vinyls and make the final selections for the display. This was the fun part for me! I had a method to the madness as I spread out on the floor some of our favorite vinyls to begin sorting which ones would showcase well with our home decor and reflect our story.

This vinyl record storage shelf is handmade from solid Aspen wood and comes in a walnut stain. Custom finishes are available on request and my husband worked with the seller to achieve a darker stain to match our home decor. The seller offers a variety of sizes and you are able to custom select the height and width based on the size of your space. Our vinyl record storage shelf is 3×5 rows allowing for 7 records and 8 album covers to be on display. The total design measures 64 inches (W) and 41.5 inches (H). The media console under the display was purchased a couple years later from a local home store and I love the mix of the darker stain above with the walnut console below.

We love listening to a wide variety of music and find this piece of wall art has a way of connecting us through stories about our favorite artists or ways in which music has played a role in our lives. This is such a fun piece of wall art to have in our home and looking at the different artists immediately sparks joy for me. If you still have your old vinyls from childhood or are ready to start a collection, I highly recommend this item. It’s a unique way to add a piece of art into your home decor and reflect a little bit about you through music.

Model Airplanes

2- Model Airplanes

Another unique piece of wall art we have in our basement are these model airplanes my FIL made more than 50 years ago! He had such a talent for a variety of woodworking skills and we are fortunate to have on display several pieces of his work throughout our home. My FIL passed away the year we were building this home and never saw the finished space. When we had the opportunity to inherit these, we decided to hang them in our basement living room which is a place where we spend the majority of time relaxing in the evenings. These model airplanes reflect a story of a younger man who built these for fun many years ago and who was a wonderful person we all love and miss every day.

Not everyone has the opportunity to inherit an item such as these model airplanes, however the approach to how I have curated our home can be adapted to other unique items gifted or purchased which tell a special story about your family. I believe the trick to a well styled home is to find ways to incorporate a blend of store bought items paired with heirlooms or special purchases, such as those made on a trip or items passed down through generations, throughout your living spaces.

If you do have a passion for woodworking or know someone who would love this kind of project, I’ve shared a similar balsa wood airplane model kit to check out. You never know if what starts as a fun hobby, ends up on display years later as a unique piece of art!

Song Sound Wave Artwork

3- Song Sound Wave Artwork

I have always been drawn to the various images on Pinterest showcasing how people have found unique ways to reflect a special moment in time, such as their first house or their wedding day. While I love the look of traditional photos on display, I am also drawn to the unique pieces of artwork which tell a different story of a memorable day. Years later, when my husband surprised me with this song sound wave artwork, it was the perfect addition to add on the wall in between our home offices. Every time I walk by this hallway, I am reminded of our commitment to each other and how our song selection, “Better Together” by Jack Johnson continues to be the perfect tagline for our marriage.

This song sound wave artwork was another purchase from Etsy and is great gift or unique art piece to add in your home. This custom design captures the sentimental selection of any special song and creates a unique piece of art to add to your walls. Our piece measures 30 inches (W) and 20 inches (H) and the seller offers a variety of different sizes based on your needs. The quality of this piece is even more impressive in person and is another great conversation starter when hosting guests.

If you are looking for a unique item and have a special song that resonates with you, check out this Etsy shop to create a song sound wave art piece for you or someone you love!

Final Thoughts

Curating spaces throughout your home to tell your story and reflect your style takes time, patience and intentional decisions. I have found it is worth the wait and the investment in making sure our home has small reflections of us throughout each space helps me keep in the forefront of our lives what matters most.
