How to Decorate with Intention | Curating Spaces You Love

Hey there! If you are new to reading Home with Booz, thank you for being here. If you have visited this blog before, thank you for coming back to learn with me ways we can make our lives less complicated and more fulfilled.

Do you remember when you would spend hours shopping and bring home decor items you thought you would love only to find out it doesn’t really fit your style long term? I was this person for many years. I would shop endlessly with a goal of filing spaces around our home and following the trends without asking myself the right questions to make more intentional decisions to curate our space.

But after moving into our new home three years ago and a whole lot of donations to Savers, I had a realization this wasn’t for me anymore. I was tired of moving and storing stuff I no longer wanted. I was tired of carrying the guilt and heaviness which came with having unfinished projects and things I didn’t need or use.

I was ready to live with intention and align our home and spaces to reflect this desire to be more thoughtful about the use of time and how we want to live our lives. I became okay with allowing room for empty spaces on a wall or bookshelf while I thoughtfully styled our home over time, mixing in new and old pieces to curate a space that truly feels like us.

this began my journey of

curating intentional spaces

“Be intentional with your space. Don’t be afraid to say no to things that don’t serve you.” – Unknown

For me this has meant embracing a lifestyle to consistently,

  • get rid of stuff that no longer serves me
  • stay intentional about what I bring into our home
  • observe how we live in a space
  • create systems to support our needs
  • curate spaces to reflect what is meaningful to us

How Do You Decorate With Intention?

You may wonder if this means that everything in your house needs to be either a meaningful item or really expensive in order to stand the test of time? My answer is no. I think it’s about balance and knowing how to mix and curate a blend of items to create form and function. Today I want to share a few ideas for how to decorate with purpose and style your space to curate a a home you love.

Main Floor Living Room

1- Books Help Tell Your Story

Have you ever been to someone’s house and find yourself checking out the titles of books they have on their shelves? It’s a fun way to learn more about a person’s interests and how they choose to spend their time. I love to add in books when I am styling a space. Books have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember and are a powerful way to showcase what we value. In our living room, I selected a few books to display that I’ve enjoyed reading over the years which have influenced my love for both design and organized spaces. I’ve paired these books with other decorative objects to style on our bookshelves, creating a timeless look that highlights values we hold around our home. Now every day when I pass by this space I feel a sense of belonging and a gentle reminder of the importance we hold in having a space we love.

2- Music Highlights Your Personality

Another great way to showcase your personality and interests is to create artwork by installing a Vinyl Record Storage Shelf. This creates a unique display on the wall and invites people who visit your home to learn more about you. I love how music can connects us when sharing our love for the artist or the meaning and listening experience of a song. We like to have music on in the background and I find this conversational piece of artwork is a great way to share artists who have been a part of our lives. I often hear a story from people visiting our home about their favorite artists or memories of vinyls they own, which is a nice way to spark a meaningful conversation with our friends. I shared in this post how I use music to set the mood for hosting guests, incorporating our love for music and sharing this with friends when we gather together.

3- Small Spaces Share Your Passions

When we were designing and building our new home, we were intentional about evaluating each space throughout the floor plan to maximize every area to meet our needs. We worked with our builder to use a portion of our storage space in the basement to create a walk in wine cellar. I am so happy with how this turned out and if you have a passion for wine, it’s a great idea to consider for an unused space. Wine on display not only makes it easy to grab a bottle to share one of your favorites when hosting friends, it’s also a nice way to share our love for wine and incorporate this into our home.

My changed approach to styling our home has allowed me to create spaces I love. Incorporating items with special meaning throughout our home, gives an opportunity each day to relive a memory or remind yourself of how rich your life is in the experiences you have with others. I have been able to say no to things that don’t serve me, and my time is no longer spent endlessly shopping to fill up spaces but to intentionally curate over time.

Final Thoughts

If you are struggling with how to decorate your space, take a look around and see what items you have that spark joy and best reflect you. Then work towards styling those items throughout your home. This post pairs well with a Seghesio – Old Vine Zinfandel which is one of our favorite wines we keep stocked in our wine cellar! If you found this post useful, please consider sharing it on Pinterest with others! Cheers!
