5 Favorite Home Decor Items to Curate a Classic Design

Are you tired of looking around your home constantly feeling like it needs a refresh? Curating spaces around a home takes time, despite what we often see on social media. Read below for ideas on how to design a home with classic home decor to create a timeless space!

I shared briefly in this how to decorate your home after Christmas post, some of my discovery in recent years which has shaped how I decorate our home and the process I follow to curate a timeless feel in each space. There are several advantages to this approach, one of those being I am no longer spending money or time chasing the newest trend and instead I am investing in classic items I feel confident I will love for many years.

Target is one of my favorite places to shop and I have found endless items there to add to our home in a way which reflects the timeless look I’ve grown to embrace. I love the process of checking out the newest home decor each season and selecting those classic pieces to add to our spaces. Today I am going to share 5 classic home decor items I’ve purchased from Target over the years which continue to stand the test of time including artwork, decorative objects, decorative baskets, entryway benches, throw pillows and blankets.

Artwork

Finding the right piece of art can help fill in a space on a large wall, while adding visual interest to a room.

Over the last few years, I have added several different pieces of artwork from Target throughout our home. I’ve been impressed with their wide selection of different artists, online and in stores, and appreciate the ability to easily search by size or type of art to help find the perfect piece for a space. Our bedroom is a blend of traditional and modern pieces, such as the chair (which was formally in our daughter’s nursery room) paired by two more modern pieces of furniture and accessories to create a transitional space. I debated for quite some time on what to place over this white 6 drawer dresser to help complete this area and finally purchased this framed wall art. I love the subtle colors and the sense of calm I feel when looking at this every day. The size was just right to fill the wall above the furniture and paired well with the rest of the room. Once this item was added, the space started to feel more inviting as a place to come to relax and unwind.

Decorative Objects

Smaller decorative objects are the final touches in a space and adding in timeless pieces over time creates a curated look.

I tend to purchase decorative objects in classic shapes with a timeless design, allowing me to use these same items for many years. Target’s black taper candle holders, set of 3 are one of those items which can easily be moved to different rooms, adding a simple and elegant touch to any space. Currently I have these candle holders paired with the cream taper candles, set of 6 and will often change out the candle color for a seasonal update. I recently picked up this marble black rectangle tray which came out in Target’s new collection of home decor. This marble tray mimics the black granite countertops we have in several areas of our home and adds a nice depth of color with visual interest on top of these white 2 door cabinets. For now I plan to leave the tray empty to enjoy this piece as is, and will consider adding in another item or two when I find the right fit. All of these items are classic, timeless, decorative objects with an affordable price point, which is a great investment to add to any collection.

Decorative Baskets

Decorative baskets are an item which never goes out of style. Finding the right basket allows you to blend form and function throughout your home!

It’s possible I’ve never found a basket I didn’t like as they are the perfect blend of form and function! Over the years I have curated quite the collection of decorative baskets and have them throughout the house to assist in storing items with easy access. Well made baskets are another item which can last for many years and I still have in rotation wicker baskets I bought from Target for our first home 19 years ago! I’ve used them for just about everything from storing blankets to serving as a plantar for a fiddle leaf tree. These rope baskets are a standing item in our entryway and seasonal updates are made by switching out pillows and blankets to add a different vibe to the space. These are an older version I purchased many years ago so I linked an updated option in stores now including this cute black rope basket and cream rope basket. Textured baskets, like a rope or basketweave style, is another simple way to add visual interest while styling spaces around your home.

Entryway Benches

Benches are a timeless piece of furniture in an entryway. Creating a landing spot for your guests and family to come and go is a great way to set the stage for your home.

I love having a bench in an entryway to frame in what can sometimes be an awkward wall for coming in and out of a house. In our home, I created an entryway space with a bench by our front door and back basement door. These have become a place for us to put on and off shoes as we enter or exit the home as well as a landing spot for guests to set their belongings. In the basement, the wall along the stairs was the perfect spot to create this seating area and this rounded cream bench with black tufted throw pillows from Target helped to fill in this space with both form and function. Target offers a wide selection of benches and we purchased both of ours online with quick and easy delivery right to our home.

Throw Pillows & Blankets

Throw pillows and blankets are the soft touches inviting guests and furry friends to relax and unwind in a space.

Pillows and blankets are a simple way to makeover a space for a seasonal update or to create a timeless look with finishing touches in a room. If I want to find quality items at an affordable price, a quick run to Target usually lands me what I am looking for to match our style. For years I struggled with finding the right throw pillows to mix in to our living room spaces. I shared in this cozy winter favorites post how I created a winter white vibe in our home by adding in this cream blanket with a coordinating throw pillow and this modern throw pillow to our main area. I love this sweet picture of our golden doodle showing off just how inviting this space is to snuggle in on a lazy afternoon. Final touches are an important part of a welcoming environment for a home and finding the right mix of neutrals and textures can create a timeless approach to decorating a space to be enjoyed for many years.

Since I’ve made the transition to purchasing classic, timeless items for around our home, I have found a new joy in looking for those special, small touches to add to a space.
